A brilliant pillar of auroral light rises into the night sky above Mt Taranaki, creating a scene that appears more at home in science fiction than in the New Zealand landscape. Stretching high above the mountain, the luminous beam formed during an intense geomagnetic storm that brought the southern lights to much of the country.

Captured during one of the most significant auroral displays visible from New Zealand in recent years, this image records a fleeting moment when charged particles from the Sun interacted with Earth's magnetic field, producing vibrant curtains and columns of light across the southern sky.

The road leading toward the mountain draws the eye directly to the towering beam, creating a natural pathway between land and sky. For a brief moment, the familiar silhouette of Mt Taranaki became the centerpiece of an extraordinary celestial display.
