At Peter’s Pool near Franz Josef Glacier, the surrounding rainforest and steep alpine valley are reflected across the still surface of the water. Low cloud hangs over the mountains, softening the rugged landscape and creating a scene where forest, rock, sky, and reflection appear to merge into one.

This image was captured in complete darkness, long before the landscape could be seen clearly by eye. Through the camera’s long exposure, the hidden details of the valley slowly emerged — the shape of the mountains, the texture of the forest, and the mirrored forms resting quietly on the water below.
