A South Island Tomtit out looking for an early morning feed.
The tomtit is a charming and curious little forest bird found throughout New Zealand’s main islands and many offshore ones. Males are typically black-and-white, while females are brown-and-white, and both sexes can often be heard before they’re seen—calling softly or singing sweet, melodic tunes. Preferring native bush and mature plantations, tomtits are agile hunters, darting from perches to snap up insects. Though threatened by predators like rats, they remain widespread and resilient, often flitting close to observers with surprising boldness. A delightful, watchful presence in the forest.
